Namtso Lake Lhasa Tour

Overview

Tibet's cultural and religious capital is Lhasa. Lhasa is home to some of Tibet's most famous and sacred temples. Every day, thousands of pilgrims prostrate in the vicinity of the Jokhang Temple. Lhasa, along with the famous monasteries of Sera and Drepung, is a must-see for anyone interested in Tibet. This itinerary will allow you to spend four days in the city and see everything it has to offer. Following your time in Lhasa, you will travel to Nam Tso, a high-altitude lake. Along the way, you'll see magnificent views of the Nyenchen Tanglha Range as well as nomad herders in traditional yak wool tents.

For ages, Namtso Lake has been regarded as Tibet's greatest lake, and its formation has been awe-inspiring in its magnificence. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau was produced by the extrusion of the Eurasian Plate and the Indian Plate, with its continental crust set on a basement that was shaped around 1 billion years ago. Namtso Lake was produced at the bowl-shaped sunken area due to the unstable rising and sinking of tectonic movements on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which was followed by some glacial actions.

Namtso Lake covers an area of 1920 sq km and rises to a height of 4718 m above sea level on the Plateau's snowcapped Nyaiqentanglha mountain range. The Lake's average depth can reach more than 30 meters. From a satellite image, Namtso Lake appears to be a vast piece of land rising into the sky, confirming its Tibetan name of "heavenly lake."
